So no one ever called Bush a traitor except behind his back.

as reagan was mentally ill, no doubt Bush was running the show.
he should have also been sent to prison.

That's really unfair. He faced some enormous problems when he was president. I think his major fault was his inability to tell the American people a story that they wanted to hear. And his philosophy of the presidency was different from that of republicans.Carter attempted to start a dialogue with the American people to give them a chance to help make some tough decisions that he thought we were facing. He found out that most americans don't want a discussion, per se. They don't want to be responsible for the fate of this country. After all, if things go wrong who can they blame? They want to be told what to do so that they can criticize without any blame falling on them. And the truth is, the popular vote between Reagan and Carter wasn't that far apart. There were a large number of people who wanted carter to stay in office. They realized he was telling the truth and that we should start tightening our belts at a time when it wouldn't hurt like it's hurting now.Reagan garnered 43,903,230 votesCarter received 35,489,115Some have said that Carter would have won if the Army had not tried to send helicopters into Tehran during a wind storm. Perhaps Carter told them it had to be that day --- most likely the Army overstated their abilities without any concern for timing and rather than smear the Army, the buck stopped with him. But other bad things happened as well. His trusted friend was smeared and resigned to fight a law suit that was inspired by dirty politics. He was later found completely innocent but the scandal touched the Carter Presidency and his honesty had been called into question. (Big corporations didn't want him thought of as an honest man. He was definitely saying things they didn't want to hear.)The hostages were held in Tehran because of a deal between Bush Sr and the ayatollah -- it later played out as the Iran-Contra affair. Most don't know that negotiating with the foreign government is considered treason when the negotiator is not the president or a representative of the president. So no one ever called Bush a traitor except behind his back. And republicans didn't care -- it is, after all, the bottom line that counts. Democracy is not that important if your candidate wins.Carter was a populist on the side of the people. He was a good and honest man (I hated his stand on nuclear at the time) and America wasn't ready for that. As a consequence we got snowed for the next 12 years.

I never thought someone could take Carter's place in that category...but the Bammer did.Carter may be a good guy ....but that didn't make him a good president. Even moral -less Clinton was a better president than either of these two.
